The establishment of the Dominican Order in Sri Lanka took place at Christ King Church in December 1974, under the facilitation of the then parish priest, Rev. Fr. Francis Fernando, with the blessings of Thomas Benjamin Cooray, the first Sri Lankan Archbishop of Colombo.
Rev. Sister Polin Perera and Rev. Sister Agnus Agodamahawaththa were the pioneering sisters who played a key role in the establishment. They were later joined by Rev. Dominic, Rev. Kathrien Anthony, Rev. Radath Egodawatha, and Rev. Merium Fernando, who continued their service and contributed to the growth of the Order. Their services included education, parish work, and healthcare, among others.
Initially, the sisters resided in a small house at the front of the church grounds, but later, a new residence for the fathers was built, prompting the sisters to relocate to the new building. The parish priest then took residence in what is now the convent. Eventually, the arrangement was reversed. A chapel and convent were also constructed later in Rathmaldeniya.
Today, the Dominican Order has expanded across Sri Lanka, with its roots firmly planted at Christ King Church.
