HISTORY OF PANNIPITIYA PARISH
Formation of an organized Christian community in Pannipitiya began in 1928 when Rev. Fr. Zacharias Dabarera was the parish priest of Kotte parish. Some government servants working in the area and some Catholic families living in the area requested Rev. Fr. Dabarera to have a Holy Mass for them in their area. A private house in the Pannipitiya Moraketiya road belonging to Mr. Henry James Madanayake was made available to celebrate Holy Mass. From 1928 to 1930 Rev. Fr. Felician Fernando who was the secretary to Archbishop helped Rev. Fr. Zacharias Dabarera to celebrate Holy Mass in this house.
In 1929 Fr. Dabarera and Mr. Henry James Madanayake bought a land called Maragahawatta for the church for a church. A small church with made with Cajuns was the first church of Pannipitiya parish. Gradually a permanent building was put up for the church over the time. Boundaries of the church were extended up to Meegoda over the time. Don Sylvester became the first Parish Priest of the Parish.
